How Caravan Loan Pre-Approval Works

What does caravan loan pre-approval actually mean?
Pre-approval is a lender agreeing, in advance and in writing, that it would fund you up to a set amount before you have picked the van. To get there the lender works through your income, your outgoings and your credit file against the figure you asked for, and its yes carries two conditions, that the eventual caravan suits its policy and that nothing about your situation shifts in the meantime.
That puts it a rung above a quote, which is only an estimate, and a rung below formal approval, which needs an actual van attached to the file. Treat it as your touring budget confirmed on paper, and expect it to stay live for somewhere between one and three months depending on the lender.
Why get pre-approved before visiting dealers or caravan shows?
A caravan show exists to turn a wander down the aisles into a signed order form, and dealer yards work the same way. Arrive with no finance sorted and you end up discussing the van and the money at the same desk in the same conversation, which suits the salesperson far more than it suits you.
Holding pre-approval flips that. You haggle on the van's price as a buyer whose funds are already arranged, any finance the dealer floats gets measured against the approval in your pocket, and the sign-today push loses its bite because your ceiling was fixed before you walked through the gate.
It counts double for private sales. A tidy used van with a genuine seller rarely stays listed long, and owners give first attention to buyers whose money is real. Pre-approval also guards against the classic mistake of falling in love with a van a bracket above what you can sensibly repay.

What do lenders assess for pre-approval?
The lender covers the same territory it would for a full application. It looks at what you earn and how steadily, what you spend and already owe, what your credit file says, and whether the requested amount fits your capacity. Payslips do the job for PAYG applicants, while self-employed buyers use tax returns or the lighter paths through low-doc options. Our guide on caravan finance for self-employed buyers covers that route properly.
What stays deliberately vague is the van. A pre-approval names a ceiling and some broad asset conditions rather than a specific caravan, which frees you to roam across new stock, used yards and private listings inside the approved envelope. Land on something much older than the approval expected, say a fifteen-year-old bush tourer, and tell your broker early, because the van's age can change which lender the file belongs with.

Being quoted and matched against the panel by a broker leaves no mark, because no credit enquiry is needed for that stage. The formal pre-approval itself usually does involve a check, and that is exactly why the file should land with one carefully chosen lender rather than being fired at several banks that each stamp your record.
Lenders get nervous when they see a burst of recent enquiries on a file, and it can shape the offers you receive afterwards. Avoiding that pile-up is a large part of what the broker model is for.
Where does pre-approval end and formal approval begin?
Pre-approval judges the borrower. Formal approval judges the borrower and the van together. By the pre-approval stage the lender has already satisfied itself you can service the debt and has fixed your ceiling. Once a particular caravan joins the file, the lender measures it against asset policy, confirms the purchase details and, on a private sale, runs the ownership check and the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) search too.
With the hard yards on you already done, the conversion tends to be fast, often inside a business day for a dealer purchase. The van's details go on, the last checks run, documents issue for signing, and at settlement the lender sends the money straight to the dealer or seller.
Where the distinction earns its keep is when your plans move. Swap to a different van under the ceiling and inside the asset conditions and the file rolls on untouched. Pick something far older, far dearer or bought through an odd channel and the application may need re-homing with another lender, a move your broker makes before you sign anything.

How long does pre-approval last and what can void it?
One to three months is the usual life of a pre-approval. A longer hunt does not send you back to square one, since the file gets refreshed rather than rebuilt, so long as your circumstances still match what was assessed.
The things that kill one early are predictable. Taking on fresh debt, missing repayments elsewhere, switching jobs, or chasing an asset well outside what the lender assessed will all force a rethink. Hold your finances steady between approval and purchase and stay under the ceiling, and converting to formal approval is normally a formality inside the week.
A single enquiry with Morella Finance measures your profile against the panel and lodges the pre-approval where it fits best. You shop knowing your number, and once the right van appears the file converts and settlement is organised directly with whoever is selling.
