Why is self-employed income assessed differently?
The standard lending template assumes an employee, with wages landing every fortnight and a PAYG summary to prove it. A self-employed carpenter's money behaves nothing like that. It arrives in lumps as jobs invoice, some of it goes straight back into tools and the ute, and the accountant quite legally trims the taxable figure with deductions, so the number a lender reads on paper undersells what the business actually earns.
None of which says you cannot afford the repayments. It says the wage-earner lens gives a distorted picture of you, and the answer is to use lenders and document paths designed around business income instead. Caravanning skews heavily toward people who work for themselves, tradies, farmers, owners winding a business down toward the long lap, so this corner of lending is deep and well practised.
What documents will lenders accept from ABN holders?
Up-to-date tax returns showing steady income put you on the full-doc path, where mainstream lenders treat you much like any wage earner. Expect them to want two years of returns and possibly the business financials, and in exchange the entire panel stays in reach.
Where the returns are running behind, the business has grown since the last lodgement, or deductions have flattened the taxable figure, low-doc caravan finance strips the paperwork right back. In most cases the front and back of your driver's licence covers it. A few months of banking gets requested too, though usually only where the ABN has been registered for under 6 months. Requirements shift lender to lender, and sorting that out before anything hits your credit file is exactly what broker matching does.

How does low-doc caravan finance actually work?
Instead of dissecting a pile of financial statements, low-doc leans on your ABN and its trading history. For a business owner whose accountant has done a thorough job minimising taxable income, that is often the fairer reading of what the business really supports.
Underneath, nothing exotic is happening. The van secures the debt, repayments run over the agreed term, and the caravan itself faces the same age and price checks as any other application. A deposit or some asset backing behind you helps a low-doc file along without always being demanded, and because there is so little paper to review, clean applications tend to move fast.

Twelve months of ABN registration is the common floor among lenders here, with some happier at twenty-four. Sit in that band or beyond and you are in the well-supplied middle of the market.
A younger ABN narrows the field and invites more questions without closing the door. The standout exception is the trade continuation story. A carpenter who spent a decade on wages and now invoices for the same carpentry work is a very different proposition to someone opening an unrelated business cold, and several lenders recognise the difference in how they assess the file. Being registered for GST where turnover calls for it adds another mark of an established operation. With a young ABN, the sensible first move is finding out which lenders will truly entertain the file before a single application goes in.
Does your business structure change the application?
Sometimes, yes. A sole trader borrows in their own name, so personal and business finances flow into one assessment without fuss. Where a company or trust owns the business, the lender examines the entity's position and normally wants personal guarantees from the directors as well, pulling your own credit file into the picture alongside the company's.
No structure rules caravan finance out. Each just changes the documents requested and how the file gets packaged, so the thing that matters is telling your broker how your affairs are set up at the very start rather than halfway through an application.
There is also the question of whether the van earns its keep. Hire fleets and touring operations exist, and a van bought to produce income may belong inside the business on a commercial structure. A business owner buying the family tourer is the ordinary case, where the loan stays personal and the business is simply where the income comes from. Which side of that line you sit on is a conversation for your accountant.

How do you prepare a strong self-employed application?
The preparation list is shorter than most people expect. Have your driver's licence handy, plus recent banking if the ABN is younger than 6 months. BAS, bank statements and accountant letters belong to mid-doc lending, which is a separate product altogether. Even with so little required, tidy paperwork is still what separates a quick approval from a slow one.
From there, line up pre-approval before you go near a yard, the same as any wage-earning buyer, and test the repayment on the caravan finance calculator first. With your borrowing power confirmed on paper, dealer stock, new caravan ranges and private listings all become simpler decisions. One enquiry with Morella Finance matches your real documentation against the lender panel and lodges where the policy actually fits instead of where it will bounce. Working for yourself never made anyone unfinanceable. It just means the lender has to be picked with care, and picking lenders is the broker's trade. For how the loan itself operates, Caravan Finance 101 covers the ground.
