Buying a Caravan Privately: How Finance Works

Can you get finance for a private caravan sale?

Yes, and it is more common in caravans than almost any other asset class. Vans are long-lived, well cared for and frequently sold between owners rather than through yards, so lenders have built private sale caravan finance processes for exactly this. The loan itself is the same secured structure as any used caravan loan. What changes is the verification and settlement work around it.

A dealer purchase gives the lender certain comforts automatically, and a private sale has to establish them instead. The seller must actually own the caravan, the payment has to land safely, and if there is finance owing against the van, it has to be handled as part of settlement. That usually means a payout letter, with the outstanding amount paid out to the existing financier at settlement. If more is owed than the van is selling for, the seller needs to cover the difference before settlement can proceed. Every extra step in a private sale exists to sort out one of those things.

What should you do once you have agreed a price?

Agree the deal, not the handover. Hold off on transferring money or collecting the van until finance has run its checks. In the meantime, gather what the lender needs, which is the make, model, year, VIN or chassis number, registration, the agreed price and the seller's name and contact details.

This is also the moment for pre-approval if you do not already hold it. Sellers respond to buyers whose money is organised, and pre-approval means the remaining steps are about the van, not about you. If you are still settling on a budget, a few minutes with the caravan finance calculator before you negotiate keeps the offer grounded.

What checks protect you when buying privately?

The central one is a PPSR search. The Personal Property Securities Register records security interests over assets, and a search against the van's identifiers shows whether any lender has money owing on it. Buy an encumbered caravan without clearing that debt and the previous owner's problem can become yours. The same round of checks confirms the ownership and registration details line up with the seller.

Some lenders also require an inspection or valuation for older vans. Even where they do not, an independent inspection is worth considering for your own protection, because water ingress, chassis rust and wiring faults are all cheaper to find before settlement than after.

How does settlement work in a private sale?

The lender pays the seller directly. The seller provides bank details and, if their own loan is still running against the van, a payout letter from their lender. At settlement the funds move from your lender to the seller, or partly to the seller's financier to clear the encumbrance first, with every step documented.

This is safer for both sides than cash or a personal transfer in a driveway. The seller sees cleared funds from a financial institution, and you get a documented transaction tied to the ownership and PPSR checks above. Once payment clears, you collect the van, transfer the registration into your name and the loan runs like any other secured caravan loan.

Can you buy a caravan interstate with finance?

Yes, and it is common, because the right van at the right price is often a state away. Finance handles distance well as settlement is electronic, so the lender's checks and the direct payment to the seller work the same whether the van is in the next suburb or across the country.

Two extra things need managing. Sight the van before settlement, or arrange an independent inspection where the van is, because photographs hide exactly the faults that matter. And plan for registration, since each state handles an interstate transfer differently and the van will generally need to be re-registered in your state after purchase, with its own inspection requirements. Build the travel or transport cost into the budget too.

Sellers in a different state are also a reason to lean on the documented settlement process rather than informal transfers. The lender paying the seller directly, against verified ownership and a clear PPSR search, protects both parties who may never meet in person.

What do you and the seller each need to provide?

Your side is photo ID, proof of address, income evidence and the application paperwork your broker prepares. The seller's side is photo ID, proof of ownership such as registration papers, bank details for payment, and a payout letter if finance is still owing on the van.

Timing runs a little longer than a dealer purchase. Allow roughly one to three business days from approval to settlement, mostly for verification and the direct payment steps. Your broker keeps both sides informed so the extra days stay orderly. Not every lender does private sales well, which makes lender choice matter more here than in most purchases.
