Truck finance, explained plainly.
Step 1 of 5
Understand truck finance
Truck finance is assessed on the truck and the work it does. GVM, body type and configuration are the first things a lender looks at, because they say what the truck is for.
Rigids, prime movers, tippers and refrigerated bodies are all financeable, along with the trailers that work behind them, over terms of one to seven years.
The lender registers its interest on the PPSR. On heavier trucks a lender looks harder at the value and the specification than it would on a light vehicle.
Why choose truck finance
A truck earns money every month, and financing spreads what it costs across those same months rather than taking a large sum out of the business up front.
Keeping capital in the business matters more in transport than almost anywhere, because fuel, tyres and compliance costs arrive whether the work does or not.
A planned finance term also makes fleet renewal something you schedule rather than something forced on you when a unit finally stops.
Deciding if truck finance fits
Owner-operators and established fleets are assessed differently, so the shortlist of lenders is different too.
Older trucks are financeable but narrow the panel, since fewer lenders will carry an ageing unit for the full length of a term.
Specialised bodies need a lender comfortable with that segment. A crane truck or a refrigerated unit is not valued the same way a standard tipper is.
How to apply for truck finance
Provide the ABN, the trading history and the truck's details including GVM, body and configuration. That is what your broker needs to shortlist lenders accurately.
If you are buying at auction or privately, tell your broker before you bid, so the valuation and the settlement are arranged in advance.
Pre-approval is possible the same day on straightforward files, and your broker handles payment through to the truck going into service.
Tips for truck finance
Compare what the truck earns each week against what it costs each week, finance repayment included. That is a better guide than the purchase price on its own.
Service records matter on heavy vehicles. A high-kilometre truck with a full history often assesses better than a low-kilometre one without.
Confirm the configuration suits the work before financing it. A truck bought for the wrong task is an expensive thing to re-specify later.
