USED VS NEW FINANCE
How used car loans differ and why a broker matters more.
Used car finance: bank vs broker
Lender restrictions on used vehicles are complex
Age limits, odometer caps, and private sale rules vary significantly across lenders. A broker navigates these restrictions automatically, saving you time and credit enquiries.
Private sale finance is a specialist area
Not all lenders offer private sale finance. Those that do have different documentation requirements. We match you to the right lender for your specific purchase pathway.
Condition and valuation affect approval
Lenders lend against a vehicle's assessed value, not just the purchase price. We work with lenders whose valuation criteria suit older or high-mileage stock.
One application, no score damage
Instead of applying to multiple lenders and collecting credit enquiries, we assess your profile across the panel.

How used car finance works
A used car loan works the same way as a new one. Fixed repayments over an agreed term. What changes is how closely the lender looks at the vehicle itself, because age, kilometres and condition decide which lenders will finance it and on what terms.
Most lenders set a maximum age the car can reach by the end of the loan. It's the reason two lenders can look at the exact same car and land on completely different answers, one financing it without a second thought and another declining outright.
Why finance rather than buy outright
A used car is still a significant amount of money, and spreading the cost through finance means you are not limited to whatever cash happens to be in your account the day the right car turns up.
Pre-approval also works the same way for dealer stock, private sellers and online marketplaces. Your budget is confirmed in advance, so you can move the moment the right one appears.
Choosing the right used car loan
If the car meets a lender's age and condition rules, secured finance is usually available and generally costs less. Where it does not, an unsecured loan is often the way forward, assessed on your profile rather than on the car.
Buying privately adds a step. Most lenders will still finance it, but expect a check that the car is free of existing finance and a process for paying the seller directly rather than handing over cash yourself.
Applying for used car finance
We match your application to lenders across our panel whose policy suits the specific car you are buying, not just your income and credit file on their own.
Most used car applications reach a pre-approval decision the same day. Once you have found the car, we handle settlement, including the extra steps a private sale needs.
Tips for getting used car finance right
Know the car's age and rough kilometres before you apply. It lets your broker rule out lenders whose policy wouldn't fit anyway, rather than finding out after the fact.
If you are buying from a private seller, allow time for the ownership and encumbrance checks. They protect you as much as the lender. Compare total cost across the full term rather than the repayment alone, since shorter terms are sometimes all that is on offer for an older car.

Older Vehicles Welcome
Many lenders cap vehicle age. We access lenders who finance cars up to 20+ years old.
High-Km Vehicles Considered
High odometer readings don't automatically disqualify you. Specialist lenders assess the full picture.
Seller Loan Payouts Handled
If the seller still owes money on the car, we coordinate the payout at settlement so the title transfers cleanly.
Fast Pre-Approval
Know your budget before you inspect a single vehicle. With most lenders, pre-approval typically holds for 60-90 days.
