How Your Credit Score Affects Your Car Loan

What a credit score is in Australia

Australian credit reporting runs through three main bureaus, Equifax, Experian and illion. Each holds a file on you listing credit accounts, repayment history, applications you have made and any defaults or serious credit events, and each expresses it as a score on its own scale.

Lenders do not simply read the number. They read the file behind it, including how much credit you hold, how reliably you repay, how often you apply, and whether anything has gone seriously wrong. Two people with similar scores can be treated quite differently depending on what produced them.

How lenders actually use it

Your file does two jobs in a car loan application. It decides eligibility, because every lender has a credit policy describing the profiles it will accept and your file determines which of those policies you fit. And it shapes the offer, because many lenders tier their terms by risk, so a stronger file is generally met with a stronger deal.

This is why the market splits. Mainstream lenders serve clean files. Specialist lenders serve borrowers with past defaults, thin files or credit events, at pricing that reflects the risk. Neither group advertises where its lines sit, which is a large part of why broker matching exists.

Repayment history is the engine

Since comprehensive credit reporting arrived, your month-by-month repayment history on loans and cards sits on your file for two years. A long run of on-time payments is the strongest positive signal an ordinary borrower can build, and it outweighs most quick-fix tactics.

Defaults are the opposite, as they stay on file for five years and move you from mainstream policy into specialist territory. If a default is listed in error, dispute it with the bureau, because a wrong default is the single most expensive mistake a file can carry.

The enquiry trap

Every formal credit application adds an enquiry to your file, and clusters of enquiries in a short period read as distress. A borrower who applies directly to four banks in a fortnight has, before any decision is made, made their own file worse.

This is the mechanical argument for going through a broker. Getting a quote and being matched to lenders does not require a credit enquiry, and when the application is lodged, it is one enquiry with the lender chosen because your profile fits. Our guide on pre-approval walks through where in the process the credit check actually happens.

A simple file check before you apply

You can access your credit report from each bureau without charge under Australian law. Do it before you start shopping. Check the accounts listed are yours, the limits are right, old closed accounts actually show as closed, and no default sits there in error.

Then avoid taking on new credit in the months before your application, keep card balances managed, and make every existing repayment on time. Boring, consistent behaviour is what moves a file. Nothing else works as well.

If your file has scars

Past defaults, a discharged bankruptcy or a thin file do not end the conversation, they narrow the lender list. Specialist lenders on our panel assess these situations on their merits, looking at what happened, how long ago and what your conduct has been since.

The worst move is spraying applications at mainstream lenders whose policy was never going to accept the file, collecting an enquiry with every decline. The better move is to lay the file out once with a broker who knows where each lender's lines sit, then lodge a single application where it can succeed. That is the comparison Morella Finance runs across the panel with one enquiry.
