How to Finance Equipment as a Sole Trader

Can sole traders get equipment finance?

Yes, on the same footing as companies and trusts. What qualifies a borrower for equipment finance is an ABN and a business purpose for the asset, not an entity structure. A sole trader buying a trailer, a coffee machine or an excavator is a standard commercial applicant, and the market is built to serve exactly that scale of business.

The differences are practical rather than fundamental. You apply in your own name, your personal credit file carries more of the weight, and your business and personal finances sit closer together in the assessment. None of that narrows what you can buy or the structures available to buy it with.

How is a sole trader assessed?

As one financial life. Lenders look at the business income your ABN produces, the personal commitments that income supports, and your credit history across both. There is no company structure sitting between you and the lender, which cuts both ways. A tidy personal position strengthens the file directly, and personal debts count against capacity just as directly.

The asset side runs as it does for any borrower, on the age, value and type of the equipment, covered in our machinery finance guide for the heavy end. Strong assets help sole trader files meaningfully, because the security does some of the work a company's financials would otherwise do.

What documents do you need?

If your tax returns are current and consistent, they are the strongest evidence and keep the widest lender panel open. Bring the last two years where you have them, along with identification, ABN details and recent bank statements.

Where returns run behind the financial year or deductions have compressed the taxable figure, low-doc commercial policy skips the financials and runs on your licence and ABN, as our low-doc equipment finance guide sets out. Keeping business banking separate from personal is still worth doing, because if your ABN is under 6 months old a lender may ask to see a few months of it, and statements that need a highlighter to decode slow every assessment they touch.

Does your personal credit history matter?

More than it does for any other structure. With no company financials to lean on, your personal repayment conduct is the lender's best evidence of how the loan will be treated. A clean file opens mainstream policy, while blemishes narrow the field toward lenders who assess what happened and how long ago.

Protect the file around application time. That means no new personal credit in the preceding months, no cluster of enquiries, and existing repayments kept spotless. One well-placed application beats a scatter of hopeful ones, because every enquiry lands on the same personal file the lender is reading.

What structures suit a sole trader?

The chattel mortgage is the usual fit. You own the equipment from settlement, balloons are available where the asset's resale value supports them, and terms run to the asset's working life. Repayments can be shaped around seasonal income where the work demands it, which suits the many sole traders in agriculture, tourism and trades.

On the tax side, the general shape is that interest and depreciation may be deductible to the extent the equipment earns business income, and GST-registered sole traders may have input tax credits to claim on the purchase. The specifics depend on your registration, business-use proportion and the rules in force, so confirm them with your accountant before structuring the deal.

How do you package a strong application?

Lead with what is strong. Years in the trade, steady banking, work booked ahead and a sensible asset at a fair price all read well. A modest deposit widens the lender pool where the file is thin, and a repayment tested on the equipment finance calculator against real income reads as judgment rather than optimism.

Then place it once, well. Sole trader files are placement-sensitive because lender policies differ on exactly the things that vary most at this scale, meaning ABN age, documentation depth and asset type. One enquiry with Morella Finance matches your file against the lender panel, including the lenders who actively want small-business equipment deals, and if your ABN is young, our guide on equipment finance for new businesses covers the extra ground.
