Equipment Finance 101: The Complete Guide

How does equipment finance work in Australia?

Equipment finance is business lending secured by the asset it buys. The lender advances the purchase funds, your business takes the equipment to work, and repayments run over an agreed term with the equipment as security. The most common structure is the chattel mortgage, where the business owns the asset from settlement, with leases and hire purchase available where a different shape suits.

The point of the product is timing. Equipment earns money, and equipment finance lets the earning start now while the cost spreads across the years the asset works. A business that waits to save the full price of an excavator pays for it twice, once in cash and once in the jobs it could not take in the meantime.

What equipment can you finance?

Almost anything a business uses to earn. That covers earthmoving and construction machinery, agricultural equipment, trucks and trailers, forklifts and access gear, manufacturing plant, medical and dental equipment, commercial kitchens, and the technology and fit-outs covered in our technology and fit-out finance guide.

Lenders group assets by how well they hold value. Wheeled and tracked machinery with strong secondhand markets sits in the easiest lane. Specialised plant and soft assets like software and fit-outs sit further along, where the assessment leans more on the business than the asset. The category the asset falls into shapes which lenders want the deal, which is a placement question before it is anything else.

What structures are available?

The chattel mortgage leads. The business borrows, owns the equipment from day one, and the lender registers security until the loan is repaid. Balloons can defer part of the principal to the end of the term, and repayments can be shaped around seasonal cashflow where the business earns unevenly, covered in detail in our seasonal repayments guide.

Leases and hire purchase change who owns the asset during the term and how the tax mechanics run. In general terms, the structure affects the timing of GST and what may be deductible, and those specifics belong with your accountant before you sign rather than after. The structure decision is worth ten deliberate minutes. The default is not always the fit.

What do lenders assess on an equipment application?

Three things, broadly. The business side covers trading history, income evidence and existing commitments, with full financials for established operators and alternative documentation under low-doc commercial policy where the paperwork trails the trading. The borrower side is credit history, both personal and business.

Then there is the asset itself. What it is, its age and condition, the price against market value, and how readily it could be resold all feed the decision. A well-priced excavator from a known brand strengthens an application on its own, while weak or highly specialised assets shift the weight back onto the business.

How does the application run end to end?

Gather the file before the gear. Identification, ABN details, income evidence that matches your situation, and the equipment's details once chosen make up the application. Pre-approval commonly lands the same day on straightforward files, which matters when good used gear sells fast and auction dates do not move.

Settlement pays the seller directly, dealer, vendor or private, with verification steps scaled to the purchase. Private and auction purchases add ownership and encumbrance checks, covered properly in our guide on financing used and auction equipment. Then the equipment goes to work and the loan runs alongside it.

What mistakes should first-time borrowers avoid?

Attachments can often be included in the funded amount, and forgetting them at approval means finding the money for them in cash later. Quote the whole working package, then test the repayment on the equipment finance calculator against realistic earnings, not best-case ones.

The second is taking the vendor's finance desk as the whole picture. It is one option, convenient and sometimes competitive, but unexamined convenience has a price. And mismatching the term to the asset's life, whether a loan that outlives the equipment or a term so short it starves cashflow, is the quiet mistake our guide on equipment loan terms exists to prevent.
