What Deposit or Security Do You Need for a Personal Loan?

Do you need a deposit for a personal loan?
Generally, no. Unlike a home loan, a personal loan is not a percentage of a purchase. It is an amount assessed against your capacity to repay. Lenders approve the figure your income, commitments and credit history support, and there is no standard requirement to contribute a deposit alongside it. Most personal finance in Australia is arranged exactly this way.
Where a deposit-like contribution does appear, it is by choice or by context. Paying part of a purchase yourself and borrowing the balance reduces the loan and its repayments, and on some asset purchases a lender may ask for a contribution where the amount sought sits above what the assessment comfortably supports. A contribution is a lever available to you, not a gate you must pass.
What does security mean on a personal loan?
Security is an asset the lender can rely on if the loan is not repaid, registered against the loan for its life. On a secured personal loan that asset is usually a vehicle, sometimes another titled asset the lender accepts. If the loan defaults, the lender can repossess and sell the security, which is the obligation you accept in exchange for lending backed by more than your signature.
An unsecured personal loan involves no such registration. Approval rests entirely on your profile, and nothing you own is attached to the debt. The obligation is still real, since defaults are pursued and recorded on your credit file, but no specific asset stands behind the loan.

When would you choose a secured personal loan?
Most often when the loan buys the asset. Vehicle purchases naturally suit secured structures because the car is there to secure the deal, and lender appetite for asset-backed lending is broad. Security can also open doors when a profile is thinner, a shorter credit history or modest income, because the asset gives the lender something the file alone does not.
The trade-offs deserve equal billing. The secured asset is truly at risk if repayments fail, it usually needs to stay fully insured for the loan's life, and selling it before payout requires the lender's involvement. Whether secured or unsecured produces the better offer for you is a market question, priced lender by lender, not a rule to assume in advance.

Capacity and conduct. A personal loan application stands on demonstrated income, manageable existing commitments and a credit file showing obligations met on time. These do the work a deposit does in property lending. They are the lender's evidence the loan comes back. Our guide on how your credit score affects approval explains the file side properly.
You can strengthen each pillar before applying. Stabilise income evidence, reduce unused credit card limits since limits count against capacity even unused, and let recent enquiries age. If the amount you want sits beyond what the assessment supports, the honest levers are borrowing less, adding a contribution from savings, or waiting while your position strengthens, rather than pushing a marginal application into a decline.
Does a contribution improve your loan anyway?
Often, yes, even when nobody requires it. Borrowing less than the full amount of a purchase means smaller repayments, less total interest over the term, and a loan that clears sooner. On a vehicle, a contribution also keeps the loan comfortably inside the asset's value as it depreciates, which keeps every exit option open if plans change mid-term.
The balancing consideration is your buffer. Emptying savings to shrink a loan leaves no room for the unexpected, and the unexpected is reliable. A sensible middle course keeps a genuine emergency reserve and contributes what sits above it. The right split depends on your numbers, which is a five-minute conversation with a broker before it becomes a five-year commitment.

How do you apply with or without security?
The process shares the same spine either way, built on identification, income evidence and bank statements, with the asset's details added on secured applications. Unsecured applications can move very quickly since there is nothing to value or register, while secured applications add settlement steps around the asset. Both commonly reach pre-approval the same day when the file is complete, as covered in our personal loans guide.
The placement question, which lenders suit your profile, amount and structure, matters more than the paperwork. One enquiry with Morella Finance compares secured and unsecured options across a panel of lenders, shows you what each structure actually offers in your situation, and manages the application through to settlement.
